Tickets

WDW ticket bookletIn 1971 when Walt Disney World opened there was on a single park and 2 tickets required to get the Magic Kingdom. The cost of the ticket was $3.75 for transportation and general admission. You were required to purchase tickets to ride any of the rides. Disney would sell books of tickets for the attractions. They would contain ticket lettered from A to E, each one for a different ticket would represent a different type of attractions from the simplest to the most cutting edge resectivly.

Disney (as they still do) raised prices year to year (with the execption of 1976).

In 1979 Disney introduced a pricing system that allowed resort guests to have a discount compared to the day guests. In later in 1979 they started doing away with the A-E ticketing system and started using “passports” which included unlimited use of all attractions.

In 1982 Epcot Center opended and the A-E tickets were history. They were replaced by a 1 to 4 day World Passports.  “Parkhopping” was now required to experience the whole of the “World”. The cost of a one day ticket was now up to $15 for an adult. The park ticket was no longed collected upon enterance but stampped with the date it was used and returned to the guest. Guest were then allowed to use “leftover” old tickets to be used for credit towards new ticktets.

By 1986 Disney had introducted a 5 day “Worldpassport” that was sold for $81

With the opening of the 3rd park – Disney-MGM Studios in 1989 a one day park ticket was now $29

The 90’s brought about many changes to the ticketing at Walt Disney World.

The first change brought about by Disney was the upgrade of the turnstiles and new ticket media. The new media would be punched to mark the days used along with the date. Guest with older media would still have it stamped by hand.

With the increase in visitors there was an increase in tickets being resold with unused days left by unlicensed vendors at a reduced rate.

The biggest change of the decade was in late 1993 when “Parkhopping” was only allowed by resort guests and Disney Good neigbour hotels. The would meant that an day guest could only purchase a 4 day value pass - one enterance per park plus a park of the guest choice and guests would only be able to visit one park per day.

The next change was to add a 5 day and call it the “Around the World Pass”. This would allow guest to vist the 3 parks plus the 2 parks of their choice including Typhoon Lagoon, River Country, Discovery Island or Pleasure Island. The “Parkhopping” option was added back in March of 1994 to allowing it to be available to all.

To combat the resale tickets in March 1994 Disney started using tickets that would put a picture of the purchaseser right on the ticket. These tickets would only last till 1996.

The change was brought about by using a Automated Ticketing System (ATS). This change had the days tracked by a comptuer system using a magnetic strip on the back of every ticket. The only way to see the days remaining on a ticket would be from Disney directly. The new tickets looked like credit cards, with numerous designs.  Also in 1996 the resort guest discount was discontiuned.

The “Parkhopper” and “All-in-One” ticket was released in 1998. This ticket had 5, 6 and 7 days length and you got a total of days to be used at any park. The “ParkHopper” would allow just that you to visit more than on Major Park in a day. The differnce in the “All-in-One” ticket was you could “Park Hop” plus had enterance to all the water parks and Pleasure Island.

The opening of Disney’s fourth theme park – Disney’s Animal Kingdom saw a one day adult ticket up to $42.

The final ticket before the currect ticket structure was the Be Our Guest (1993) / Length of Stay Pass (1995) / Unlimited Magic Pass (1999) and Ultimate Park Hopper (2001).  This allowed resort guests entrance to all Parks / Water Parks and Pleasure Island for the number of night of their stay (from 1 to 13)
