The Magic Kingdom consists of 7 lands; Main Street U.S.A., Tomorrowland, Mickey's Toontown Fair, Fantasyland, Liberty Square, Frontierland and Adventureland.

Walt never did see the opening of Disney World; he died five years prior to the opening on December 15, 1966. On December 17th Roy Disney, Walt’s brother announced that he postponed his retirement to see that Walt’s dreams were fulfilled. He also announced that the resort would be renamed Walt Disney World so that his brothers name will live on.

In May of 1967 construction began with drainage canals and roads to serve the Magic Kingdom and the 3 original Walt Disney World resorts, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

Walt Disney World opened on Oct 1st 1971 with over 25 attractions up and running. Most remaining attractions would open over the next 2 months. On October 23 1971 Roy Disney along with 1076 piece marching band lead by conducted by Arthur Fiedler officially open Walt Disney World. In the first year alone 10.7 million people visited Walt Disney World.

With the Magic Kingdom being opened for just over 1 year construction started on Space Mountain. The growth of Walt Disney World continues with new attractions, hotels and shopping venues keep opening on an ongoing basis. In March of 1976 Walt Disney World welcomed their 50 millionth guest.

Want to meet your favorite? Here's where to begin looking. Mickey's pals appear near City Hall on Main Street throughout the day.
